| Site Description |
Bentonville was the site of the last major battle of the Civil War. Fought on March 19-21, 1865, just three weeks before Lee's surrender to Grant at Appomattox. The battle is also significant as the largest battle ever fought on North Carolina soil, the last Confederate offensive operation of the war, and the only significant attempt to stop the march of Sherman's army after the fall of Atlanta.
