Site Description
On April 19, 1861, the first casualties of the Civil War occurred when the Sixth Massachusetts Infantry fought its way from President Street Station to Camden Station. President Lincoln passed through the station’s facilities on multiple occasions including secretly in March, 1861 en route to his Inauguration, en route to Gettysburg to give the Gettysburg Address in 1863, and on April 18, 1864 when he presided over the opening ceremonies of the Baltimore Sanitary Fair at the Maryland Institute. Lincoln's funeral train carrying his body to Springfield, Illinois, stopped at Camden Station in 1865. Camden Station has recently been restored and the Gentlemen’s Waiting Room now appears as it did in 1865. The first floor and basement house the Sports Legends Museum, with an area dedicated to the station’s Civil War history.
